More Than Meets the Eye. (Book Review)

More Than Meets the Eye by Karen Witemeyer.

About the book:
Many consider Evangeline Hamilton cursed. Orphaned at a young age and possessing a pair of mismatched eyes--one bright blue, the other dark brown--Eva has fought to find her way in a world that constantly rejects her. Yet the support of even one person can help overcome the world's judgments, and Eva has two--Seth and Zach, two former orphans she now counts as brothers.

Seeking justice against the man who stole his birthright and destroyed his family, Logan Fowler arrives in 1880s Pecan Gap, Texas, to confront Zach Hamilton, the hardened criminal responsible for his father's death. Only instead of finding a solitary ruthless gambler, he discovers a man not much older than himself with an unusual family. When Zach's sister, Evangeline, insists on dousing Logan with sunshine every time their paths cross, Logan finds his quest completely derailed. Who is truly responsible for his lost legacy, and will restoring the past satisfy if it means forfeiting a future with Evangeline?

My thoughts:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five stars! I loved it!!
These characters have a place in my heart now. They had depth, they were relatable, they had flaws.
That was my favorite thing. Too often we hide our true selves, afraid of the inevitable judgments of our flaws, our brokenness. We fail to understand that our imperfections are what make us beautiful, unique.
We tuck everything away for fear of exposing ourselves to the wrong person. But sometimes we have to take chances  We must take risks because if we never ask, we'll never learn.
While it was a little harder for Evie and Logan to hide their flaws, because their biggest ones were on the surface, I loved how beautifully they came to accept who they are, and how they accepted others without judgment.
I loved Evie's character. Because even though life had delt  her a bad suit, she still endured with a happy demeanor.
I loved how different this book was. It was a good different, like the characters. It was intriguing, exciting, wonderful, I didn't want to put it down!

"He smiled and laughed and clapped his hands as he watched the livery owner put the horse through its paces. He was so happy, so full of life. Everything I had been. Suddenly I wanted that life back. I didn't like being sad all the time, being scared. I wanted to laugh, to clap, to dance around in a circle like that boy at the paddock. But I'd forgotten how. I felt heavy inside  Dark.
That's when I saw the flower. A bright yellow sunflower. Growing straight out of the crack where the side of the shed met the hard packed ground. So many horses and men trampled the ground around the livery and corral that not even grass grew. Just dirt. And mud. And weathered wood. Brown and gray everywhere. Except for that flower. A flower that hadn't been there earlier in the day. Looking back, logic tells me that flower was probably a quick-growing weed that I hadn't noticed because it hadn't bloomed until later in the day. But it doesn't really matter how it came to be there, because in the depths of my five-year-old soul, I knew that God had put it there for me to find at that precise moment. As soon as my eyes locked on that flower, warmth spread through my heart like a fire lit in a room that had sat cold for too long. God saw me. He cared about me. And He was showing me how to leave the darkness behind and enjoy beauty once again."
